Default Squealing

Every time my friend turns his car on ('91 190) he hears a horrible squealing sound coming from the hood.

Any idea what the problem maybe be? I thought maybe it was just because it was cold, but it does it even if the engine is hot.

I don`t` know if it`s the same for a Mercedes but as far as my ex husband, a used to be mechanic, always told me, that squeal is usually a loose belt. Could be the same thing with your friends car.

Thanks! I have heard that too, a squeaky car means a lose belt. I better tell him, I hope it's that easy. That is a cheap, easy fix. I would think that if he didn't get it fixed it might break all the way creating more damage.

Exactly. Fortunately replacing a belt shouldn't cost you too much.

I would suggest you tell him to do it quickly because I have seen what can happen to a car when the belt breaks. Besides the fact that you can end up in a crash that you may not walk away from, the belt can remodel your whole engine and the bill will be astronomical.

I agree. It's too easy a fix to let it be ignored for too long. I'm sure just about any mechanic could take care of it in just a few minutes, so tell your friend not to put it off.

Oh yeah! I have been there with the belt breaking. Not a good thing. I lost all control of my car and went off the road. The belt just snapped and fell right off. Luckily, I wasn't hurt and there were no other cars around me.

You were really lucky McQueen. What happened to the car? How much did you end up spending to fix it?

I used to work for a car service place and I have seen some nasty stuff because of silly delays that end up causing a lot of heartache. I think one of the worst ones I have seen was also because of a belt, only this time the guy wasn't as lucky as you. There was still hair and blood on the inside of the windshield when they brought the car in.
